The major thrust areas of the research in the department are: Microbiology, Botany, Immunology, Biochemistry and Molecular biology. Ten students awarded with Ph.D. and two with M. Phil degrees. More than 50 papers were published in national and International Journals with high impact factors within last five years. Two research projects were also completed in the department. Students and faculties participated in national and International conferences and won the prizes.
In microbiological field a wide array of research is being conducted at Department of Biotechnology that includes isolation of bacteria for their characterization and application in pigment and biocolour production, enzyme isolation, Bioremediation, waste treatment etc. Various research scholars of Department of Biotechnology are working in varied areas like Bioplastic production, The Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) reactor, activity of herbal extracts on liver cells.
In field of Botany, survey on some medicinal plants of Garudeshwar, Nandod taluka of Narmada District & Tribal region of Dadra Nagar and Haveli are being carried out. On the other hand, research related to effect of the river water on some medicinal plants of Valsad district, Forest flora & Ethno botanical Survey of Tribal region of Dadra Nagar haveli, the commercial cultivars of stevia cultivated in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Gujarat etc. are also being conducted.
Biological activity of different part extracts of Nyctanthes- arbor- tristis was performed. This plant is found to be rich in secondary metabolites like tannins, alkaloids, phenolics etc. Alkaloids were extracted, tested on various cancer cell lines to determine their role in cancer. Docking studies were performed to know its efficacy and mode of action during cancer therapy.
Significant efforts are being carried out for the development of In-vitro Immuno diagnostic assay for detection of Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. HCV Ag-Ab rapid test is advantageous for early diagnosis in resource limited settings. Along with that, anticancer property of a plant Tribulus terrestris and its saponins are investigated and found potent cytotoxic agents. They are able to induce apoptosis in Human Breast Cancer Cells MCF-7. Not only that, Blood group antigen genotyping of blood donors and patients is also being investigated as it is important, when multiple blood transfusions are demanded in disease like Leukemia, sickle cell anemia, thalassemia etc. Molecular methods for typing of blood group antigens are the choice of methods along with the serological methods.
In Enzymology, research is on Enzyme asparginase and lipase. These enzymes are isolated from different microorganisms and then parameter is optimized for maximum production of enzyme. Molecular identification of potential organism producing enzymes was also done. Asparaginase will be tested for its anticancer activity on different cell lines while lipase is used for industrial application and enzyme cellulase in textile industry. Research is going on screening of Brassica family plants for their bioactive compounds which will be tested for its anticancer activity and for enzyme cellulase and its applications in textile industry.
