Department of Chemistry

The Department was established in 1970 but effectively started functioning after it moved to the University campus in 1977 with 6 faculties and 30 M. Sc. Students in organic chemistry specialization. Since then there has been a continuous progress in the faculty/student and different specializations offered. The department of chemistry moved to the present premises in 1991. As of now the department has 2 year regular M.Sc. programmes in (I) Inorganic Chemistry (II) Organic Chemistry (III) Physical Chemistry (IV) Analytical Chemistry with total intake of 80 students in M.Sc. Part I. Self-Finance M.Sc. Courses in Organic Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry is being run in 2 new buildings with a capacity of 60 and 25 students at M.Sc. Part I level in each respective course. In addition, a Self-Finance M.Sc. Evening Course for working people with an intake 30 students is also offered.
The department is actively engaged in research leading to M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees. The research is done in the areas like Synthetic Organic Chemistry (Organic Synthesis, Dyes, Medicinal Chemistry, Polymer), Nano Structured Materials, Drug Delivery, Environmental Chemistry, Surface & Colloids chemistry, Liquid Crystals, Co-ordination Chemistry etc.
The academic strength of the department is illustrated in peer reviewed high impact factor Scientific Citation Index(SCI) journals (like Tetrahedron, Tetrahedron Letters, Royal society of Chemistry, European Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Langmuir, Acta Chemica Indica, Medicinal Chemistry Research, RSC Advance, Synthetic Communication, Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, Colloids and Surfaces B, Journal of Molecular Liquids, The European journal physical chemistry, Journal of Chemical Thermodynamics, JournalĀ  of Solution Chemistry, Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data, Thermochimica Acta). Until now department has published more than 950 research papers in national and international journals. We believe in producing efficient and highly qualified students. The faculty members frequently visit Universities/Industries in India and abroad. The department has so far produced 360 Ph.Ds and 185 M.Phils. The total citation of the publications is more than 1000 (Source Scopus).
The Department has also organized few symposia/refresher courses. At present department has Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 3 Assistant Professors, 1 Emeritus fellow, 12 non-teaching staff, over 380 Master’s students and more than 40 research students.
The Department has made best efforts in quality teaching & research. Collaboration between inter university in India and abroad as well as Industry which strengthen academic and research activities. Department is committed to such activities.

As mark of appreciation, the Department was sanctioned 60 Lacs in SAP Phase I (Special Assistant Programme) and Rs. 148 Lacs in SAP Phase II by UGC, New Delhi. Also department was sanctioned around 30 BSR Scholarships for pursuance of Doctoral study.
