The Department was established in 1970 but effectively functioned after it moved to the University campus in 1977 with six faculties and 30 M.Sc.students in organic chemistry specialization. Since then there had been a progressive increase in the faculty/ students and different specializations offered. The department of chemistry moved to the present premises in 1991.
As of now the department has 2 years Regular M.Sc. Programmes in (i) Inorganic Chemistry, (ii) Organic Chemistry, (iii) Physical Chemistry, (iv) Analytical Chemistry with total intake of 80 students in M.Sc. part I.
Self-finance M.Sc. courses in Organic Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry also run in two new buildings with a capacity of 60 and 25 students at M.Sc. I level in each respective courses.
In addition, a self-finance M.Sc. evening course for working people with an intake of 30 students is also offered.
The department is actively engaged in research leading to M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees. The research is done in the areas like Synthetic Organic Chemistry (dyes, drugs and polymers), Nano Structured Materials, Drug Delivery, Environmental Chemistry,Surface & Colloids chemistry, Liquid Crystals, Co-ordination Chemistry etc.
The strength of the department’s research effort is illustrated in the many papers published in reputed journals each year by faculties and students.Department has published more than 900 research papers in national and international journals. We believe in producing efficient and highly qualified students. The faculty members frequently visit Universities/Industries in India and abroad. The department has so far produced 350 Ph.Ds and 185 M.Phils.
The Department has also organized few symposia/refresher courses. At present department has 4 Professors,2 Assistant Professors, 1 UGC-BSR faculty fellow, 12 non-teaching staff, over 380 Master’s students and more than 40 research students.
The Department make best efforts in quality teaching & research. Research collaboration with foreign universities is an important feature of the department.
Because of quality research, the department has been sanctioned huge amount of grants of Rs. 60 lacs
in SAP Phase-I
