Department of Sociology

The Department of Sociology established in 1970 has been offering M.A, M.Phil., Ph.D., and Post-Doctoral courses. In addition, the Department has also stated offering MSW (two year full time) professional course in English medium from the academic session 2005-06 under the self-financed scheme. The semester system (Choice Based Credit System) has been introduced to both M.A. and MSW. The admission to M.Phil is based on entrance test cum counseling looked after by the Research Study Committee (RSC). The admission to Ph.D. programme is also based on entrance test cum proposal presentation before the RSC. The objective is to ensure the quality of research as per UGC guidelines. The admission to MSW is based on entrance test cum counseling.

Students belonging to different social strata, especially a sizeable number of SC and ST, get admissions to different courses offered. The Department has its own well equipped library with more than 2000 books, periodical, journals, newspapers, etc. There are about 38 computers with advanced software including SPSS for the use of students, especially of MSW. The Department has vast experience in academics, research, project work, paper presentation, publication, carrier counseling, and so on. Some of the faculty members are well acclaimed for their contributions to the discipline at national and international level. The Department organizes workshops, symposia, seminars and conferences from time to time. Eminent scholars visit the Department from time to time.

Giving due recognition to the contributions of the Department the UGC has entrusted the Department with the “Center for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy” under the 11th plan in 2007. The center has successfully completed eight research projects on vulnerable groups like the dalits, minorities, women, migrant labourers etc. Having been satisfied with the activities of the centre, the UGC has extended the functioning of the center for next 5 years.
