The Department of English of this University began functioning from June, 1970. Presently the Department offers M. A., M.Phil and Ph.D. programmes in English Language and Literature. The Department offers optional papers in English Language Teaching, Linguistics, Indian Writing in English, Indian Writing in English Translation, American Literature and New Literatures in English.
At the M.Phil level the department offers content courses in Literary Criticism and Theory, Modern Fiction, Modern Drama, Modern Poetry, Stylistics, English Language Teaching and Translation Studies. Research Work done in the department pertains to areas of specialization that include Modern British and American Literature, English Language Teaching, Comparative Literature, Translation Studies, Commonwealth Literature, Indian Writing in English, Indian Literature in English Translation, Stylistics and Linguistics. The Department has so far produced 55 M.Phil dissertations.
One teacher in the department, Dr. Rakesh Desai is recognized as supervisor for Ph.D. The University requires aspirants for Ph.D to submit a research proposal which is evaluated by two experts from outside the University before the candidate is allowed to register. The Department of English has so far produced 32 Ph.Ds in areas like British Literature, American Literature, Afro-American Literature, Indian Writing in English, Post-Colonial Literatures, Translation Studies, Comparative Literature, English Language Teaching and English Language Studies.
The English Department has five teachers of whom one is Professor, one is a Selection Grade Lecturer, two are Senior Lecturers, and one is a lecturer. At present 8 students are persuing their Ph. D. Ten scholars are at various stages of completion of their M.Phil programme.
The Department regularly organizes seminars and workshops on subjects related to advanced areas of language and literature studies. Students are required to present seminars and submit assignments as part of their Post-graduate programme. Lectures by eminent professors are a regular feature of the Department. We also arrange film shows based on literary classics. The language laboratories in the department are used to impart training in communication skills to students.
