The Department of Gujarati started functioning as a new post Graduate Department from January 2013. The pressing demands of the south Gujarat area for an independent Gujarati Department got fulfilled after a lapse of more than four decades. Though the name of Veer Narmad, one of the visionaries and torch bearers of Gujarati language, culture and literature, is justly attached to the name of the University, it was equally unjust to see the growth of the University without having a Department of Gujarati. Of late, due to the relentless efforts of our Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Daxesh Thakar, a full-fledged independent Department of Gujarati has been sanctioned by the Government of Gujarat.
At present, the Department offers M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. programme in Gujarati language and literature. In addition to this, the M.A. programme offers a variety of optional papers such as Folk Literature, Medieval Literature, Modern literature and Literary Criticism.
At M.Phil. level, the dissertation writing has been prefixed by compulsory content course in Research Methodology and Literary Criticism.
Research work is conducted in the Department at M.Phil. and Ph.D. level in various untouched and worthwhile areas such as Inter- disciplinary Studies, Modern and Post Modern Literature, Literary Journalism, Comparative Literature, Post-Colonial Literature, Tribal Literature, Minority and Dalit Literature and Linguistics, Literature and Aesthetic, Literature and other Arts, Literature and History, Literature and culture.
Presently, the strength of the P.G. Programme at Sem I & III is 69 students each. 17 researchers have been registered for their Ph.D. work under the able guidance of the faculty members of the Department. One U.G.C. sponsored Junior Research fellow has also joined our Department to carry on his research (Ph.D.)
The Department has taken initiative to organize seminars and workshops on thrust areas of contemporary interest. The students have been motivated to perform self-skilled and self-learning innovative activities in special seminars conducted for them on every Saturday. To name a few are : ‘Padya Sabha’, ‘Gadya Sabha’, Audio-Visual Presentation of Literary discourses and Films, etc.
The Department has planned to invite at least 11 guest speakers of National and International repute to enrich the experience of our students and teachers as well. Already five speakers have addressed the students and teachers in the Department.
The Department has established an excellent linkage with different Literary organizations and associations related to Gujarati Language and Literature such as Gujarati Sahitya Akademi Gandhinagar, Kendriya Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, and Gujarati Sahitya Parishad Amdavad. Recently the Department has joined hands with Commission for Scientific and Technical Terminology (CSTT) operative under Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India, New Delhi to organize advanced seminars and Trilingual Glossary in Gujarati, Hindi and English.
The last but not the least, “Kanaiyalal Munshi Adhyayan Praklpa Chair” is committed to organize different seminars and publications to glorify and assess the contribution of K.M. Munshi, a Pioneer of Gujarati Literature.
The Department of Gujarati has started functioning with dedication and commitment to be established as an iconic model amongst the most innovative Departments, not only in our state but also in our country.
The mission of the Department is to explore new vistas of sensibility and sensitivity with the help of the new knowledge of our learners acquired through the multifarious ways of advanced learning and research.
