(1) Name of the Department :
Youth Welfare and Physical Education
The Department comprises of three Boards:The activities and composition of Boards are as follows.
(1) Board of Sports and Recreation :
The Board consisting of 18 members is responsible for conducting various inter-collegiate events through out the year. It also conducts inter-university and inter-collegiate sports tournaments during the year. At the annual atheletic and youth festival meet over 120 colleges participate in the different cultural and sports events. The annual fest is a treat for the students community in particular and the citizens of the Surat at large. Being a show-case of the various facets of the talent, like music, drama, fine arts among others, it is one of the most eagerly awaited meet for the University students.The event is spread over three days and held some time in January.A mention needs to be made some of the prize winning performances have also been awarded prizes at the state and the national events.
The annual atheletic meet, which showcases the sports talent of our University students, is a witness to over 115 colleges participating in over 20 sports events. The entire funding is borne out of the budgeted students expenditure and the university. Over 1500 students take part in the diffent events .
(2) Students Welfare Board :
The Board is responsible for conducting various activities related to students’ welfare. These comprise of organizing (a) conducting elocution competitions in Gujarati. (This competition is named after “E Chho Desai Memorial trust. The competition is an inter-collegiate competition organized annually. (b) Another Elocution competition ‘Hariom Ashram’ Sponsored Bhulabhai Memorial Inter-collegiate English Elocution competition., (c) Babubhai Fakirchand Memorial Debate Competition as a part of Youth Festival and “Surat Jilla Sahkaari Mandali” sponsored Essay Competition. This apart the board is responsible for organizing Lecture series on Narmad Jayanti every year.
The board is chaired by Vice-chancellor with 23 members representing colleges and students’ community.
(3) Board for Extra Mural Studies:
The board is is responsible for using its physical and human resource to reach the larger society. The board is responsible for inviting prominent personalities for delivering lecture on cooperation. In this regard the members of Surat Jilla Sahkaari Sangh are placed on board for necessary consultations. The expenditure for this board is budgeted annually to the tune of Rs. 1,00,000.
FACILITIES FOR SPORTS AND CULTURAL EVENTS ON THE CAMPUS
A state of art facilities for the sports and cultural events is available on the campus. Some of the important facilities showcased as follows.
(1) Atheletic Synthetic Track of International standards for 400 meters running with 8 lanes..
(2) Astroturn Hockey Field meeting international standards.
(3) Indoor Swimming Pool with 25 mts length.
(4) Multi-purpose Indoor sports stadium. This caters to indoor games like Basket Ball, Volley Ball. Badmington, wrestling and Table Tennis (10 Tables Simultaneously) among others.
(5) International Standard Boxing Ring.
(6) International Standard Cricket Ground and Stadium also.
(7) For Weight Training Condition Hall 12 x 12 mts. With full wall mirrior.
(8) Among the important facilities, the department also provides coaching facilities for important games like cricket, swimming and athelitics.
